The Holy Trinity Church - one of the masterpieces of the Debar art school
Holy Trinity is a Bulgarian Revival Orthodox Church in
the Sofia village of Mirovyane. The church was built during the Ottoman rule in
1871 by craftsmen from the village of Tresanche (Macedonia). Architecturally,
it is a stone basilica with a wooden roof 12 m long and 6.80 m wide. On the
iconostasis of the church are located the icons of Jesus Christ, the Holy
Mother of God, the Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist, the Holy Great Martyr
Haralampi.
Nine years after the church was built, in 1880 it was
richly painted. Painters are the representatives of the Art School of Debar Mihail Blagoev and Hristo Blagoev from Tresanche. The
murals cover the period from the creation of the world to the Ascension of
Jesus Christ.
With the help of donors in 2012 a new high bell tower
was built next to the church. The bell has been moved from the lower old bell
tower and today its ringing can be heard in almost the entire village.
During the long period of the church's existence,
seven priests served in it.
The first priest was Spas Petkov. His birthplace is
unknown. It is believed that it could be the village of Chuypetlovo or the
village of Jelen. According to Vladimir Ignatov from Trebich (a innkeeper by
profession), his birthplace is the village of Pogledets and he worked as a
teacher in Trebich. After the inhabitants of Mirovyane built the Holy Trinity
Church, they invited the teacher Spas Petkov to become their priest, finding
him an intelligent and enlightened person. He accepted the invitation and
became a priest in three villages - Mirovyane, Trebich and Pogledets. Father
Spas was a revolutionary in spirit. Violent nature, brave and determined,
participated in the committee of the Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levski.
The second parish priest is Iliya Danev Popov, a
native of the village of Raylovo (today's village of Lyulin). In the memories
of the inhabitants of the village he remained as a modest and quiet man. He
sang church hymns beautifully and had the gift of speech.
The third priest is Dionysius Georgiev, who was born
in the village of Kumanovo (present-day Macedonia). He graduated from a
theological school in Sofia. He was a hardworking and very dedicated priest. He
lived to a ripe old age - 98 years. He died in Sofia.
The fourth parish priest is Kostadin Malinov. Born in
the village of Iskrets – Municipality of Svoge. He probably graduated from
Theological Seminary in Cherepish. He was a quiet and modest man. He served 10
years in the Holy Trinity Church until the beginning of 1945.
The fifth parish priest is Ivan Milushev Deshev. He
was born in the village of Kumaritsa. He graduated high school in Sofia and the
Pastoral Theological Institute in Cherepish. Father Ivan is the longest-serving
clergyman in the Church “Holy Trinity” - from 1945 to 2003. He also served in
the churches of “St. Georgi” (Trebich) and “St. Nicholas” (Pogledets). He
introduced several generations of inhabitants of these settlements to the
Christian faith. People remember him as a clergyman who adhered to the eternal
Christian values and strictly observed the church canons.
The sixth priest is Alexander Kirilov. Born in Sofia.
Graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University. He served together
with Father Ivan from 1999 to 2004. In 2004, Trebich and Mirovyane became two
separate parishes, and since then Father Alexander has been a parish priest in
Trebich.
The seventh priest who has served in the Holy Trinity Church since 2004 is Father Iriney Lyubomirov. Born in Sofia. Ordained a priest in 2002 at the Sofia Theological Seminary.
On the 30th of October, 1971, the 100th anniversary of the construction of the temple was celebrated. Bishop Parthenius celebrated the Hierarch's Holy Liturgy, together with other clergymen from the Sofia Diocese. The temple was full of worshipers. After the solemn Holy Liturgy, Bishop Parthenius delivered a fiery speech about the importance of the temple in the moral uplift of man and the role of the church in the sociopolitical life of our people.
On May 31th, 1980, 100 years have passed since the
painting of the temple. Bishop Parthenius, together with his deacon, the monk Nikolay,
and the Sofia priests Emanuil Kozhuharov and Archpriest Petar Kirov, celebrated
the hierarch's Holy Liturgy. The choir singers were from the Sofia Holy
Metropolis. At the solemn Liturgy, Bishop Parthenius ordained a candidate for a
priest from the Tran region. At the end of the service, the bishop spoke about
the role of the church, its painting and what talented builders and painters
there were during slavery.
In 1996 marked 125 years since the construction of the temple. On the occasion of the celebrations and at the invitation of the parish priest Ivan Milushev, the solemn Holy Liturgy is presided over by His Holiness Patriarch Maxim. Clergymen from other Sofia churches also take part in the service. Representatives of local authorities and many lay people were present.
The Holy Trinity Church is one of the oldest local buildings that can be defined as an architectural and cultural value. It is a symbol of the aspiration of the locals to have a Christian temple and their own prayer house in the conditions of the Ottoman slavery. Today, the temple needs support, as the valuable and extremely beautiful frescoes need to be restored and the facade renewed.
